How to Talk About Hobbies in Spanish: Sports and Activities

9 min read2026-03-12Francisco Salvetti

A list of hobbies, Spanish sports, and activities is useful, but real conversation requires more than nouns. This guide shows you which verbs sound natural, how to ask about interests, and how to turn a short answer into a friendly exchange.

The five verb patterns that do most of the work

  • jugar a + sport or game: jugar al fútbol, jugar al ajedrez.
  • hacer + activity: hacer senderismo, hacer yoga.
  • practicar + activity: practicar natación, practicar fotografía.
  • tocar + instrument: tocar el piano, tocar la guitarra.
  • ir a / salir a + infinitive: ir a bailar, salir a correr.

Jugar normally takes a, which combines with el to form al. You play al tenis, but you do yoga: direct translations from English do not always preserve the verb.

Questions and answers you can reuse

¿Qué haces en tu tiempo libre?

What do you do in your free time?

Me gusta jugar al fútbol.

I like playing soccer.

Suelo salir a correr los sábados.

I usually go running on Saturdays.

Estoy aprendiendo a tocar la guitarra.

I am learning to play guitar.

¿Te apetece jugar al tenis?

Would you like to play tennis?

Add frequency and an opinion

Make an answer more informative with todos los días (every day), una vez por semana (once a week), a veces (sometimes), casi nunca (hardly ever), or los fines de semana (on weekends).

Example: Juego al pádel una vez por semana porque es divertido y social. — “I play padel once a week because it is fun and social.”

A short conversation

— ¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?
— Me encanta cocinar y los domingos suelo montar en bicicleta. ¿Y a ti?
— Yo prefiero actividades tranquilas. Leo mucho y estoy aprendiendo a pintar.

Notice the follow-up ¿Y a ti?. It keeps the exchange moving without needing a complicated new question.
